What research says about Brain Dumps and between-task logs.

Why might it help to empty your head onto a page—or leave yourself a note before switching tasks? The useful answer is more specific than “journaling is good for you.” Research points to attention residue, unfinished goals, and the value of a concrete plan. It also gives us good reasons not to oversell the practice.

First, an important evidence boundary

We could not find a controlled study testing “interstitial journaling” or a modern productivity “Brain Dump” as a complete, named method. What researchers have tested are several of the behaviors inside those methods: switching away from unfinished work, briefly planning how to resume, making specific plans for open goals, and writing about worries before a demanding event.

That distinction matters. The studies below do not prove that every daily log will improve focus, sleep, or well-being. They do help explain why certain kinds of logs are likely to be more useful than an undirected stream of notes.

What the research actually found

Unfinished work can follow you into the next task

In two experiments, Sophie Leroy found that people who switched away from unfinished work continued to show cognitive activity tied to the first task. The more of this attention residue they carried, the worse they performed on the next task. This supports the problem that interstitial journaling tries to solve: changing tasks does not guarantee that your attention has changed with you. Read Leroy’s 2009 study.

A ready-to-resume plan can reduce that residue

A later paper by Sophie Leroy and Theresa Glomb tested a brief intervention: before turning to an interruption, participants reflected on where they had stopped and planned their return. Across four studies, this ready-to-resume plan reduced attention residue, and performance on the interrupting task no longer suffered. This is unusually close to the core behavior of a between-task log. Read the 2018 study.

Open loops settle more readily when they become plans

Across several experiments, E. J. Masicampo and Roy Baumeister found that unfulfilled goals produced intrusive thoughts and interfered with unrelated tasks. When participants formed specific plans for those goals, the interference disappeared. This suggests that capture is only the first half of a useful Brain Dump; converting an important open loop into a credible next action may be what lets attention move on. Read the 2011 study.

Focused worry-writing helped in a high-pressure setting

In two laboratory experiments and two randomized field experiments, Gerardo Ramirez and Sian Beilock asked students to write about their thoughts and feelings immediately before a high-stakes exam. The brief exercise improved exam performance, particularly among students with high test anxiety. The finding supports focused writing before a defined pressure event—not the broader claim that any free writing reduces anxiety. Read the 2011 study.

A specific bedtime list helped in one small sleep study

In a controlled sleep-lab study, 57 healthy adults ages 18–30 spent five minutes listing either future tasks or recently completed activities. The to-do-list group fell asleep faster, as measured with polysomnography, and more specific lists were associated with faster sleep onset. It is an intriguing clue, not a universal sleep prescription: the sample was small, young, healthy, and observed for one night. Read the full study.

Broad mental-health claims are not justified

The broader expressive-writing literature is mixed. A 2018 meta-analysis of 39 randomized controlled trials did not find that brief, self-directed expressive writing significantly reduced depressive symptoms over the long term among physically healthy adults. Logging can be useful without being marketed as therapy or a guaranteed mental-health intervention. Read the meta-analysis.

One more boundary matters for a voice-first product: these interventions used writing. A voice log can preserve the same information—a restart point, a plan, or a named worry—but applying the findings to speech is a reasonable inference, not something these studies directly tested.

Two research-informed ways to try it

The ready-to-resume research points toward a narrow purpose: store enough state to make returning feel safe. Before leaving unfinished work, answer three questions.

What remains unresolved?

What will I do first when I return?

A Brain Dump that ends in relief, not another pile

The research on unfinished goals suggests that capture alone may not be enough. Use the unstructured first pass to get everything out; then turn the few important open loops into specific plans.

  1. Capture

    Empty the queue

    For five minutes, record tasks, worries, ideas, and reminders without organizing them.

  2. Sort

    Separate concerns from commitments

    Mark what needs action, what needs reflection, and what can be ignored or deferred.

  3. Plan

    Close the important loops

    Give each real commitment a specific next step and, when useful, a time or trigger.

  4. Park

    Let the rest remain captured

    Not every thought deserves a project. Make an explicit decision to leave low-value items alone.

“Taxes” is a captured concern. “Saturday at 10, download the missing statement” is a plan. The goal is not to produce more words. It is to leave your attention fewer reasons to look backward.

A personal log should have clear boundaries

Honest logs may contain names, unfinished thoughts, work details, and private reflections. Before choosing a tool, understand where your entries are stored, who can access them, whether analysis happens on a server, and how you can export or delete your data.
